Most runners have no idea how to rehab an injury because they’re missing one simple hack: a framework.

Without it, they’re just guessing. Feel something tight? Stretch more. Roll it out. Ice it. Throw on some KT tape, cross your fingers, and rub a four-leaf clover. That’s like taking ibuprofen for cancer; you’re just treating symptoms while the real problem gets worse.

Injury recovery works like bamboo. Bamboo spends years building roots underground before shooting up 90 feet in six weeks. Nothing visible happens for a long time (years in fact), then everything happens at once. But most runners don’t get this because they panic at the first twinge and throw everything at it. Or worse, they ignore it completely until they can’t walk without limping.

To actually fix injuries, you need three things:

  • First, patience with the process. It takes 4-6 weeks to see results from most rehab protocols and 12-16 weeks to fully come back. Your body doesn’t care about your race calendar.
  • Second, know what specific questions to ask specialists. This is so that you don’t waste time and money on generic advice that doesn’t apply to you. Think of it like bringing a car to a mechanic; if you can’t describe the sound it’s making, or when it happens, they’re just guessing too.
  • Third, research to fill in the gaps. Specialists can’t tell you everything you need in the time they have. You have to educate yourself to get the most out of their experience.
